If you believe in the theory that there’s wisdom in crowds, you might be interested in a few of the golfers that Bodog’s online sportsbook bettors are choosing to win this week’s British Open at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in England.
It probably doesn’t need to be mentioned that Rory McIlroy (13/2) has been the most popular wager. Northern Ireland’s wonder kid is coming off the first major victory of his career at the US Open, and let’s not forget we could be talking Grand Slam if not for one disastrous round at the Masters. The fact he was able to exorcise the final-round demons at Congressional proved that he has what it takes to handle the massive pressure that comes with golf’s biggest tournaments.

The FedEx Cup winner is the golfer that accumulates the most points for all FedEx Cup PGA tour events which also include all tournaments in North America and Europe and all four major grand slams events like the US Open, British Open.
Another factor in all the McIlroy betting is the absence of Tiger Woods. Even though Woods hasn’t won a tournament in what seems like forever now, he never stopped being a popular pick at Bodog. When news broke that he wouldn’t be participating at this year’s British Open due to injury, betting on McIlroy took off. I guess there’s something about wagering on the spotlight player that’s appealing to people. Maybe it’s because you know you’ll be seeing every one of their shots on TV, as opposed to the sparse coverage of lesser-known players.
Another popular player this week will be England’s Lee Westwood, who we’ve got at 11/1 odds to win. For all that he’s accomplished in his career, Westwood still hasn’t won a major. He’s come close on numerous occasions, including five top-3 finishes in his last seven majors. Could this finally be his year? Westwood is 38 years old, and with all the young talent in golf, his window might be starting to close.
Betting on another Englishman, Luke Donald (11/1), picked up considerably following the world number one’s victory at the Scottish Open this past weekend. The big knock against Donald, particularly from a wagering perspective, is that he’s great at finishing among the leaders, but he rarely ends up the actual leader. Donald hasn’t done particularly well at majors, with just a tie for fifth at the 2009 Open and a tie for fourth at this year’s Masters in the last few years, but perhaps he’ll be able to ride a hot streak to victory.
For those of you looking for a medium shot to bet on, we’ve booked some decent action on American Matt Kuchar, at 33/1. The 33-year-old is one of the few Americans expected to contend this week (Struggling Phil Mickelson is well back of the favorites, at 40/1). Kuchar finished second at the US Open, although he was a disappointing tie for 68th at last week’s John Deere Classic (won by Steve Stricker, who’s at 28/1 this week).
