To Place A Bet
For many people, having a bet – or a flutter – is part of the theatre and excitement of a day at the races, but it can be an intimidating experience until you feel like you’ve got a basic understanding of odds.
A straight bet is an individual wager based on the outcome of a single event. Straight bets include spreads, moneylines, and totals (also called over/unders). A straight bet covers when the bettor wins and the bet pays out. Certain straight bets can also push, meaning the bet. To place a bet; to place a high premium on sth; to place an interdict on sth; to place an order for sth with sb; All ENGLISH words that begin with 'T'. Choose your selection: Once you have signed up with an online bookmaker and deposited some money into your betting account, then browse to the event you want to bet on. Use the left-hand menu at your chosen online bookmaker to do this. You may be planning to bet. A lot of bookmakers offer telephone betting services, and they are usually very straightforward to use. It’s a simple matter of calling the relevant number, telling the operator you reach which wagers you want. Place bets online, by opening an account with a bookmaker and registering a debit card – you’ll need to deposit funds into this account, but you may also receive free bets that can be placed against a selection of other events. Once your card is registered, you can either use a website or a betting app to place your bets.

How and where to place a bet
It’s easier than you might think to place a bet at the races. You simply need to:
- Choose your favoured horse from the racecard and remember their name and number
- Decide the amount (the stake) you are comfortable with
- Choose the type of bet you would like to place
- Take your pick from the bookmakers at the betting ring
- Tell the bookmaker the horse’s number, the amount you want to bet and the type of bet, for example, “£5 each way on number 5”
The bookmakers typically have a minimum stake for placing a bet, but this will be clearly displayed on their boards.
You’ll be given a ticket once your bet has been placed; be sure to keep hold of it – if you win, you’ll need it to collect your winnings from the bookmaker.
What to do if you win
After a race, the winning and placed horses enter the winner’s enclosure. Jockeys dismount and return to the Weighing Room complex to weigh in with their kit and saddle.
Once the raceday officials are happy with the weights, you will hear “Weighed in, weighed in!” over the Tannoy to confirm the official result of the race.
At this point, you can hand over your betting slip to the bookmaker you wagered with to receive your winnings. If you placed a bet online, your account should be automatically credited.
The only time this might be delayed is when a Stewards’ Enquiry is called and officials need to look into a specific part of the race to ensure that no rules have been breached by a jockey and/or trainer.
What are the common terms and phrases in horse racing?
In many cases, the jargon behind the racing is the main barrier to understanding how to place a bet, but it’s not as complicated as it might sound.
If a horse has ‘long odds’, for instance, it simply means that it has a low chance of winning based on a number of factors that you’ll find on the racecard, but it also means that you’ll get more back for your stake if it wins.

How to read the form
If you want to get more familiar with the racecard to inform your bet, you can try to pick a winner by reading the form. This gives you a series of numbers and letters next to each horse’s name to indicate how it has performed in recent races. If there are more 1s, 2s and 3s than there are 7s, 8s and 9s next to the horse you like, you might have a better chance of winning.
Tips for betting at the races
- Having a bet is not compulsory, of course; the choice is entirely up to you.
- If you bet with a bookmaker or The Tote, keep hold of your ticket as you’ll need it to collect any winnings.
- Don’t be shy! The bookies and other punters on the course will be more than happy to teach you how to bet on horses.

How To Place A Bet Online:
- Go to Betvictor now and use any ‘Join’ button to open an account.
- Log in and make a deposit using the ‘My Account’ section.
- Use the menu to find your chosen sport and market.
- Click or tap the odds of your bet to add to your bet slip.
- On the bet slip enter your stake and hit the “Place Bet” button to confirm.
What About Accumulators or Multiples?
If you’re looking to place a multiple or accumulator rather than a single bet, you can still follow the first four steps as above but then the process changes as follows:
- Repeat steps 3 & 4 to add all your selections to the bet slip.
- On the bet slip in the ‘1x” box or your corresponding multiple box enter your stake then hit ‘Place Bet’.

The process of placing a real money bet online really is a quick and simple one but if you got stuck using the above steps we’ve expended upon them here to help you:
1. Open an Account and Log in
Head to the Betvictor homepage using this link and then click any of the ‘Sign Up’ or ‘Join Now’ links.

2. Find Sport
To place a bet you must first head to the page of sport you wish to bet on. You can do so by clicking the name of the sport from the extensive list down the left hand side of the Betvictor homepage or if on the app use the menu button.
3. Find Market

From the sport’s page, you can then find the market you wish to bet on by selecting from the lists of competitions and bet types. This will display for you the different available bets for your market.
4. Add to the Bet Slip
To add your chosen bet to the bet slip, all you need do is to click the associated odds which are displayed on the page.
A small ‘added to bet slip’ notification will flash up where you have clicked and your selection will then appear on the bet slip to the right hand side of the page.
5. Select Stake and Place Bet
On that bet slip, you will see a box in which you can input your chosen stake. Once you have done so, all you need do to place your bet is to click the yellow ‘Place Bet’ button.
There’s no going back once that button is clicked so make sure your bet details are correct!
You’ll also see options to place multiples and accumulators on the slip if you have added more bets (see below 5a & 5b).
5a. Add Further Selections
To build your accumulator, continue to click on the odds of your required selections and they will also appear on the bet slip to the right of the page.
5b. Select Stake and Place Bet
Once you’ve added all of the required selections, click the ‘Multiple Bet Options’ link found within the bet slip. This will display all of the possible accumulators for your selections along with boxes in which you can input a stake.
Enter your desired stake into the box for the bet you wish to place and click the yellow ‘Place Bet’ button.
